Lourdes University Offers Veteran’s Day Event

Lourdes University is offering a Veteran’s Day event on Friday, November 11 at 4 p.m. at the Franciscan Center, 6832 Convent Blvd., in Sylvania. The featured speaker is Col. Craig R. Baker, Commander of the 180th Fighter Wing of the Ohio National Guard at the Toledo Express Airport in Swanton, Ohio. Light refreshments will be served directly after the event.

Col. Craig R. Baker
As Commander for an Aerospace Expeditionary Force tasked wing, Col. Baker helps ensure the wing is ready to deploy mission-ready warriors and equipment anywhere in the world. In addition, the 180th Fighter Wing provides air defense for the Great Lakes region in support of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) / U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM). NORAD is a U.S. and Canada bi-national organization charged with the missions of aerospace warning and aerospace control for North America. NORTHCOM was established in October 2002 to provide command and control of Department of Defense (DOD) homeland defense efforts and to coordinate defense support of civil authorities.

Col. Baker has been recognized for his service and accomplishments. To date, he has received a Bronze Star Medal; Meritorious Service Medal; Aerial Achievement Medal; Air Force Commendation and Achievement Medals; and several awards including Meritorious Unit Award, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and Air Force Organizational Excellence Award.

Graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1992 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Col. Baker is a command pilot with more than 2,500 flying hours in the F-22A, F-16C/D, T-38A and T-37. He completed Squadron Officer School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama in 1999, and received a Master of Science in Strategic Intelligence in 2006 from the Joint Military Intelligence College, Defense Intelligence Agency at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington. In 2012, he received a Master of Science in Strategic Studies from the Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, in Pennsylvania.

Col. Baker’s previous assignments include:
-Squadron Electronic Combat Pilot at Kunsan Air Base in the Republic of Korea (1994-1995);
-Instructor Pilot and Assistant Weapons Officer at Hills Air Force Base in Utah (1995-1997);
-Chief of Weapons and Tactics, and Program Officer at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada (1999-2005);
-Chief, Global Strike Branch, Directorate of Requirements, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operational Requirements at the Headquarters U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C. (2006-2008);
-Director of Operations and Commander at Holloman Air Force Base, in New Mexico;
-Director of Operations, Air Force Central Command Operations Directorate, at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar; and
-Vice Commander at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.
