TOLEDO, Ohio — It has been said, if nothing ever changed there would be no butterflies. Thankfully for the beautiful and beneficial silent flyers, more change is a-coming.

The city of Toledo and Lucas County will hold a joint press conference at the Toledo Zoo to pledge their support of the local pollinator populations and habitat on Tuesday, July 19 at 10 a.m. near the recently constructed butterfly greenhouse in Nature’s Neighborhood. At that time, city and county representatives will sign the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge to help save the iconic monarch butterfly species and its disappearing habitat.

As stated on the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge webpage, by signing the Pledge the city and county are committing to the creation of habitat and education of citizens about the actions they can take to make a difference for pollinator populations in their own backyard. The entities are also signifying they will take at least three actionable steps to directly support the restoration of habitat for the orange and black pollinator.

To fulfill their Monarch Pledge requirements, the city and county will partner with and support the Toledo Zoo’s local conservation organization, Wild Toledo, with on-going urban prairie installations, upkeep and public outreach. One of the many native plants growing in the urban prairies is milkweed, the host plant and food source for monarch butterflies.

“The Toledo Zoo is proud to call Toledo and Lucas County home. We appreciate their show of support for our mission of inspiring others to join us in caring for animals and conserving the natural world. The Monarch Pledge is a big step in the right direction for conserving a small but vitally important species and we are honored to join other cities and counties across the continent in working together to ensure their future,” said Toledo Zoo executive director, Jeff Sailer.
