For this year’s spring production, Lake High School is preparing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, a musical about an island in the South Pacific during World War II. A young woman named Nellie meets and falls in love with a middle-aged Frenchman, named Emile De Becque. While that is happening, a young american soldier, Lt. Cable is on a mission to land on a Japanese-held island and report on Japanese ship movements. Bloody Mary, one of the islanders, informs us of the ‘mysterious’ Bali Ha’i, an exotic, yet off-limits, paradise, where she introduces Cable to a beautiful woman. There is drama involving relationships as well as action involving the war!
Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize winning novel “Tales of the South Pacific,” Rodgers & Hammerstein’s, South Pacific is a heartfelt, romantic and thrilling musical. Music was written by Richard Rodgers and the book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan.
