I Love Olander Day
Sunday, October 1, 2017 – Noon to 4 pm
Olander Park – Sylvania

Sylvania-area residents can make summer last a little bit longer on “I Love Olander Day” – a free, fun family event set for Sunday, October 1 at Olander Park. The celebration is free and open to the public (rain or shine) from noon until 4 pm.

Visitors can enjoy live music and entertainment, children’s activities, free horse-drawn wagon rides, free use of rowboats on Olander Lake, and a volleyball tournament. Food trucks will be available all day. A free photo booth will let families capture the fun.

The public will also be able to view a special historical exhibit of Olander, plus the vision for a proposed master plan for the park district. TOPS officials will be on hand throughout the day at Nederhouser Hall to present details and collect community feedback on the plan.

Free parking will be available in the Tam-O-Shanter and Senior Center lots adjacent to Olander. Free handicapped parking can be accessed inside Olander through the main gate on Sylvania Avenue.
“I Love Olander Day” was created to celebrate the value of our parks to the community and the high level of community support for the five parks of the Olander Park System (TOPS).

Highlights for children and families include meeting Laurel’s princesses, Ariel and Spiderman in the Gazebo from noon to 2 pm. Staff from the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library will have Go-Pro cameras for 20 children to make their own videos from 1 to 3 pm. Kids can make fairy wands and bird feeders or have their faces painted at Nederhouser Hall. Chalk art will be encourages on the east side of the park.

Entertainment on the lakefront deck of Nederhouser Hall features Notre Dame Academy students performing numbers from the “Bring It On” musical from noon to 12:30 pm; the group Decent Folk; and the Inspire Devotion Dance Center from 3-3:30 pm. A DJ will pump out the tunes for listening and dancing on the west side of the park all afternoon.

Food trucks will sell their tasty wares in the Nederhouser parking lot from noon to 4 pm with picnic tables nearby. Vendors include Deets, Nick and Ninos, Mr. Snowie, Kettle Corn, and Bigby Coffee.
And, vendors from this summer’s Sylvania Farmers Market will be selling their late-summer wares in front of the shelter house on the west side of the park (next to the beach).

Horse and wagon rides will depart from the shelter house on the west side of the lake all afternoon.
Six-person teams can participate in a day-long volleyball tournament on Olander’s courts. A $1 per person entry fee is all that it takes to play in either the “13 and under” and “14 and over” age brackets. Prizes will be awarded to all participants and tournament winners. Pre-registration information can be found online at www.olanderpark.com.

A photo contest will allow visitors to select their favorite pictures of the day to post on Facebook. Images that receive the greatest number of “likes” will be awarded a prize.

“I Love Olander Day” is presented by TOPS and organized by community volunteers.

Olander Park is located at 6930 Sylvania Avenue (between McCord and King Roads) and has been a recreational oasis in Sylvania for more than 50 years. The 60-acre park includes a spring-fed lake, play areas, a walking trail, and gardens. It is one of the five parks in the Olander Park System (TOPS) that also include Fossil, Sylvan Prairie and Whetstone parks and the Southview Oak Savannah.
