60th Lourdes University Commencement scheduled

On Saturday, May 12, Lourdes University President Dr. Mary Ann Gawelek confers bachelor’s degrees during the 60th commencement exercises. Individuals receiving honorary degrees this year are Dr. Kevin Heanue, Economist with Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Connemara West plc in Ireland; and Mr. Edward Reiter, Retired President and CEO of Mid American National Bank.

Lourdes University’s Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony begins at 12 Noon in the Ebeid Recreation Center on mid-campus, 6832 Convent Blvd., in Sylvania.

On Friday, May 11, the Baccalaureate Mass is scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel on campus grounds. The Graduate Commencement Ceremony starts at 7 p.m. that evening in the Ebeid Recreation Center.

Honorary Degree Recipients

Kevin Heanue, Ph.D.

Doctor of Letters, honoris causa

An economist, Dr. Heanue’s career has focused on promoting the economic and social development of communities in both Ireland and the United States and business sectors such as agri-food, furniture manufacturing, artisan production and rural enterprise in Ireland. His career has spanned working as an economic consultant in the private sector, as a professor in Dublin City University Business School and most recently as a research economist, then program evaluator with Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority. Dr. Heanue also holds adjunct positions at the J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics, National University of Ireland in Galway, and at the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology.

As a voluntary community activist, Dr. Heanue has served since 2008 as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Connemara West plc on the west coast of Ireland, one of country’s longest established and most innovative local development non-profits. In this leadership role, he has spearheaded an education-led development strategy that focused on opening his community as a high impact learning destination for colleges from the U.S. including Lourdes University. As a result of this strategy, Connemara West plc is a lead agency in the Irish Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development seeking to explore how this model of providing global learning opportunities for U.S. colleges can be replicated in other Irish rural communities. In addition, Connemara West is a best practice case study in the Irish government’s National Planning Framework, Ireland 2014, Our Plan, as an innovative model of global engagement. He also serves as Director of Connemara Community Radio, FORUM Connemara CLG and numerous other local development organizations.

Dr. Heanue has published more than 50 articles and book chapters in international and national publications and presented at national and international conferences. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Sociology and a master’s degree in Applied Economics from the National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland; and a Ph.D. in Economics from Dublin City University. A lifelong learner, Dr. Heanue has studied program evaluation and policy analysis at the University of Twente, The Netherlands; the University of Essex, UK; and the University of Ferrara, Italy.

Honorary Degree Recipient Dr. Kevin Heanue will be in town from Ireland May 5-14, 2018. During that time, he will be available for radio and/or television interviews. Dr. Heanue is an economist with Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Connemara West plc in Ireland.

Edward Reiter

Doctor of Business, honoris causa

From East Toledo and Rossford, Ohio, Mr. Edward Reiter served two years in active duty with the U.S. Army during Vietnam after college graduation. He taught business at Northwood and Penta High Schools while serving three years as a Training Officer for the reserves in the 983rd Engineer Battalion at The University of Toledo.

In 1965, he became employed at 1st National Bank which would later become Mid American National Bank. Over the next 40 years, he rose in the ranks from Teller to President in 1979 and CEO in 1985. During his tenure, the bank headquartered in Bowling Green, Ohio, became one of the largest 125 banks in the country, employing 6,000 and eventually sold for $3.8 billion.

Throughout his career, Mr. Reiter was active in many charities and served on several boards. He served as a faculty member in the banking programs at Southern Methodist and Ohio University and lectured at many banking events across the nation. His areas of expertise in teaching and lecturing focused on leadership and the motivation of employees.

The Bowling Green State University graduate (B.S., Education) has received more than 50 awards in his lifetime including seven hall of fame awards, two honorary doctorates and numerous community, university and national recognitions. Some of his honors include the BGSU Academy of Distinguished Alumni Award, Financial Worlds Bronze Award – Top CEO in the United States; and the New Hope Christian Community Foundation award for integrity and honesty. Mr. Reiter has served as a Board of Trustee of many higher educational institutions including Lourdes.

Today in retirement, Mr. Reiter continues to help several non-profit organizations including churches and worthy charities. He considers this work part of his mission in life. According to Mr. Reiter, the most important thing in his life is “God and my family.”
