The Franciscan Center of Lourdes University is pleased to announce the December slate of events.

Saturday, December 1
The Clarence Smith Community Chorus presents “A Community Celebration of Christmas” featuring guests – Voices at BGSU Choir, Positive Force Christian School of Dance, Toledo School for the Arts Holiday Orchestra, and C.J. Manning, Jazz Saxophone. An art reception is offered from 4:30-5:30 p.m. with the performance starting at 6 p.m. For more information, call 419-283-1434 or 419-243-1958.

Tuesday, December 4

Tuesday, December 11
The Sylvania Franciscan Village and Lourdes Lifelong Learning Program present the TED Talk Talk – “What makes a good life? Lessons from the longest study on happiness.” The TED Talk viewing with Robert Waldinger begins at 12 p.m. with a discussion immediately following. The event is free and open to the public. TED Talks are compelling presentations in 20 minutes or less. Join them for a different topic each month from 12 to 1 p.m. Individuals are encouraged to bring their own lunch. The Sylvania Franciscan Village presents “Our Call to Holiness with Guidance from Pope Francis” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Part of the Father James Bacik 2018 Lecture Series, this Advent Reflection draws on Pope Francis’ recent apostolic exhortation ‘Gaudete et Exsultate’ (“Rejoice and Be Glad”). Fr. Jim Bacik will offer practical advice on how we can move forward toward greater holiness in and through our daily lives.

Friday, December 14
The Lourdes University Lifelong Learning program presents Bicycling Around the United States for a Cause with Toledo native and retired Sylvania Schools teacher Alan Thompson.

In August 2015, Mr. Thompson began a 12,000 mile bicycle journey along the perimeter of the U.S. His goal was to raise money and awareness for two charities: Habitat For Humanity and Save The Children. Mr. Thompson raised over $32,000 for these two worthwhile organizations and volunteered at Habitat For Humanity build sites in 19 cities along the course of his ride. Riding 9,000 miles between August 2015 and May 2016, he bicycled the final 3,000 miles in summer 2017 along the northern perimeter. Come hear his stories of this epic ride!

Friday, December 14
Enjoy lunch and laughter with Lourdes University Lifelong Learning special presentation – Comedy of Reed K. Steele from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. A cross between Red Skelton, Dick Van Dyke and Danny Kaye, Mr. Steele is a master of physical comedy, mime, stand-up and improvisation. He combines comedy, music, mime, magic, stunts, sign language, and audience participation to make a memorable comedy, variety family-fun event that will capture an audience of any age.

As an actor, mime, stuntman, comedian, clown, puppeteer, magician and director, Mr. Steele has performed literally thousands of times on stage, television, and film from Los Angeles to New York. The recipient of the 1990 “Hollywood USO Entertainer of the Year” award, he has worked with Bob Hope, Buddy Ebsen, Lee Greenwood and many others. Mr. Steele has also created sound effects for films, television, and cartoons working with Mel Blanc, Paul Winchell, and Bruce Willis. Having worked with the puppetry of Jim Henson’s Muppets, he performs professionally with his production company Saturn V Productions throughout the country as time permits.

A delicious hot buffet luncheon is included, so please lunch and laugh with Lifelong Learning! $10 for Lifelong Learning members and $15 for non-members.
