TOLEDO, Ohio – Teamwork makes the dream work. Toledo Zoo and Owens-Illinois have been working together to realize the collective dream of bettering our community for more than 30 years. Recently, this partnership was honored by the local chapter of a national conservation organization for their landscaping efforts.

Toledo Zoo’s urban prairie at Owens-Illinois world headquarters in Perrysburg was recognized by the local Oak Openings Region chapter of Wild Ones with the Native Landscaping Award. This award is presented to one homeowner and one organization who have created and maintained native landscapes exemplifying the mission of the national Wild Ones organization– promoting environmentally sound landscaping practices to preserve biodiversity through the preservation, restoration and establishment of native plant communities.

Zoo staff members, Ryan Walsh, Ph.D., conversation coordinator and Jacob Schoen, conservation technician, along with O-I representative, Adam Hafer, Director of Innovation Center and Perrysburg Properties, accepted the award at a ceremony at Olander Park on December 11, 2018.

“O-I is a proud, long-time supporter and partner of the Toledo Zoo and Aquarium. We were excited to create the Wild Toledo area at O-I because it allowed us to bring their conservation efforts to our global headquarters, ultimately promoting the growth of native plants and developing a habitat to attract pollinators and butterflies,” said Jennifer Vancil, community relations director, O-I Charities Foundation at Owens-Illinois, Inc.

“The Zoo is proud to be a conservation leader and contributing member of the northwest Ohio community. We are sincerely grateful to Wild Ones Oak Openings Chapter for the recognition and O-I for their continued support of the Zoo’s mission and our urban prairie initiative. Together we are beautifying and bettering our area,” said Shayla Bell Moriarty, director of communications at Toledo Zoo.

Teamwork truly does makes the dream work.
