BG newspaper and students:

I am a one of the coordinators for VFC and would like to invite you all to our groundbreaking project: Voices For Change. VFC is a national concert tour headlined by the group Outlandish as well as a national talent competition open to any artist of any shape or form who is interested in performing and presenting their art at the concert; one of the tour cities will be Detroit, MI on June 14th. Voices For Change is announcing a few things:

 1. Young people have to speak up and out. We need to be part of our country and be proud of who we are. It is a priority to accept ourselves as part of our country and not be isolated. It is our job as well as our duty to voice out our beliefs and opinions to our fellow citizens.
2. We, as well as people all over, are striving for morality in the world. As a universal project or message, we are trying to create or bring back the morality we strive for in our entertainment, which takes up a huge aspect of our lives. Outlandish is, a hip-hop group promoting morality.
3. People, no matter what race, color, or religion, need to come together and work for a common cause and goal.

It is not only our duty to believe in this cause, but also to give it the chance to thrive. We need to step up, it is our job to give everyone the opportunity to be a part of it and to make it happen. There are so many things u can do for this project including come to the concert, help spread this message by working with our marketing team, and volunteer for this project. If you need anymore information on how to get hooked up with this, feel free to talk to me. Thank you for your time, it is greatly appreciated.

James Kurek, a former Toledo Mortgage broker with HomeLoan USA and Mortgages For You, Inc. has started a network group on myspace.com to help people avoid foreclosure. With all the bad publicity surrounding the real estate industry, James is on the search for realtors and brokers who can put a positive spin on the Toledo Market.
Froeclosure Proof Network is for professionals of all types in the Real estate business, so long as they agree to work for the consumer. As a mortgage broker I was disgusted with the nilly willy ads protrayed by the banks, tempting every citizen to buy more than the could afford. I have become a consumers advocate and formed this group to educate and protect both the consumer from foreclosure and business professionals from future litgation. Realtors, loan officers, appraisers, title agents and anyone else that can offer advice to consumers and help consumers, you are cordially invited to be a member of my network. If you have information to share I am starting a blog on June 1, 2008 for the general public. I hope to see lots of shining faces. Visit me at http://groups.myspace.com/ForeclosureProofNetwork.

You’ll have a chance to meet with the pair and purchase the documentary DVD.

The Schedule:

Saturday, May 10 - 4pm to 7pm
Sunday, May 11 - 4pm to 7pm
Wednesday, May 14 - 5pm to 8pm
Wednesday, May 21 - 5pm to 8pm
Saturday, May 24 - 4pm to 7pm

The Documentary:

In an exploration of cultural exchange through art, American documentary filmmakers Jacob David and Joel Washing focus on two distinctly different cities with the same name.

Visually rich cinematography of the Toledo, Ohio skyline and the ancient architecture of Toledo, Spain illuminate the physical differences of the cities, while in-depth interviews with artists show the deep similarities between the cultures through the universal need to create.

The Background:

Two Toledos, the debut film of documentary filmmakers Jacob David and Joel Washing, grew out of a visit to the Iberian Peninsula in 2001, where they studied the Spanish language. David and Washing are co-owners of Above the Shop Studios, in Toledo, Ohio.

Toledo, Ohio—On Saturday, June 21, the Toledo Museum of Art and its Committee for
Cultural Diversity present the fourth annual Juneteenth Celebration. This free festival features
music, dance, film, art demonstrations, food, and hands-on art activities. A highlight of this
year’s event is a talk and booksigning by author and actress, Victoria Rowell. Ms. Rowell will
speak about how the arts influenced her childhood in the foster care system. Following her
presentation, she will sign copies of her book, The Women Who Raised Me. A limited number of
free booksigning tickets will be available after June 3 by calling 419-254-5771, ext. 7494.

TMA’s Juneteenth Celebration recently received an Institutional Excellence Award from
the Ohio Museums Association—the association’s highest honor. In 2006, Juneteenth was
named winner of a Northwest Ohio Black Media Association Impact Newsmaker Award for
making a positive, newsworthy difference in the local African American community.

What is Juneteenth?

President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on January 1, 1863,
freeing all enslaved people in the Confederate States. However, it was two years later, on June
19, 1865, when more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans in Texas heard the news that
they could call themselves free. The celebrations that followed the reading of the Proclamation in
Texas began a tradition that has lasted more than 130 years and is celebrated today in cities
across America.

What is TMA’s Committee for Cultural Diversity?
The Museum’s Committee for Cultural Diversity (CCD) initiated TMA’s first
Juneteenth Celebration in 2005 and continues to provide guidance and assistance in the
planning and production of the festival. As an ad hoc committee of the Museum’s Board of
Directors, the CCD strives to encourage greater awareness and understanding of Toledo’s
culturally diverse community and to ensure the reflection of this cultural and ethnic heritage in
the Museum’s offerings. Those interested in volunteering to help with Juneteenth activities
should contact the volunteer office at 419-254-5771, extension 7390.
