Hayes Presidential Center hosts talk by Political Cartoonist
FREMONT – The world of political cartoons past and present merge Thursday, June 5 at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center. As a finale to its National Endowment for the Humanities-funded educational program - Illustrating the Gilded Age: Political Cartoons and the Press in American Politics and Culture, 1877-1901 – the Center welcomes syndicated political cartoonist Chip Bok for a public lecture at 7 p.m. Bok’s topic will be “A Cartoonist’s Life or ‘Is that ALL you do?’” Attendance is free, but pre-registration is required.
Bok has been a staff editorial cartoonist at the Akron Beacon Journal since 1987. His work appears in publications as diverse as the Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Newsweek and Time thanks to syndication through Creators Syndicate. Bok also is author of two books Bok! The 9.11 Crisis in Political Cartoons and A Recent History of the United States in Political Cartoons: A Look Bok.
On his Internet blog, Bok describes the development of his unique cartooning style as beginning in seventh grade math class where “while attempting to draw figures in the eccentric style of Mad Magazine cartoonist Don Martin, he realized that he had inadvertently drawn President Lyndon Johnson.”
His cartoons effectively meld artwork comprised of soft gentle lines with text as cutting and direct as his rapier wit. Bok’s work has earned him the Editorial Cartoonist of the Year 2006 (The Week Magazine), Best Editorial Cartoonist 1995, 1999 (National Cartoonist Society), Best Editorial Cartoonist 1992, 1996, 1999, 2000 (Associated Press Society of Ohio), Berryman Editorial Cartooning Award 1993 (National Press Foundation), H.L. Mencken Award 1993 (Free Press Association), and John Fischetti Award 1988 (Columbian College Chicago). He also was a finalist for a 1997 Pultizer Prize.
