FOCUS Awarded Their Largest Ever Episcopal Foundation Grant
FOCUS has just been awarded their largest-ever Episcopal Community Services Foundation grant to assist homeless adults in need of jobs. Family Outreach Community United Services (FOCUS, Inc.) is the recipient of $10,000 for 2008. The funds will be used for job training and certification so that FOCUS families can work to escape poverty and homelessness.
The Episcopal Community Services Foundation awards these funds to address issues of social justice in the community under the auspices of local Episcopal denominations. FOCUS member churches include St. Mark's Episcopal, Trinity Episcopal, and St. Michael's in the Hills Episcopal churches.
FOCUS has received small Episcopal grants for several years, but in 2007 requested and received a significantly larger amount. FOCUS used this grant primarily to assist participants in obtaining State Training for Nurse's Assistance certification. FOCUS reached 2007 performance goals, and the $10,000 for 2008 represents a 20 percent increase over last year’s award.
“Long-term solutions to homelessness is our mission,” states executive director Kyle Grefe. “This grant is highly significant, because it will allow families to increase their income and improve their ability to achieve economic stability.”
FOCUS was founded in 1982 by a group of Old West End clergy committed to addressing the needs of the poor in their neighborhood by creating a common front door. FOCUS now emphasizes the importance of maintaining stable, secure housing to enable families to overcome obstacles to self-sufficiency.
