American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
On the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend, thousands of Northwest Ohioans will come together in a common cause: the American Cancer Society’s fight against Breast Cancer. Their goal will be to live out the event’s motto: “Hope Starts Here.”
The event is the second annual Northwest Ohio “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk, which will kick off at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10th at The Town Center at Levis Commons, Perrysburg, Ohio.
The walk’s major sponsors are the University of Toledo Medical Center, Savage and Associates, NBC Channel 24 and 101.5 The River.
Last year’s inaugural event was a great success. More than 2,000 walkers raised over $72,000 to directly influence the American Cancer Society’s unique mission of research, education, advocacy, and patient service programs.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has no registration fee and no fundraising minimum. The Northwest Ohio noncompetitive walk is 3.1 miles, and men, women, and children of all ages are encouraged to participate. Participants in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, help the American Cancer Society take one step closer to ending breast cancer once and for all.
Participating in the walk will be cancer survivors, their families, and other people in the community who want to do their part to help defeat the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women.
One such walker in last year’s event was Sue Badas, of Perrysburg, Ohio. Ms. Badas said that she walked because “I want to do as much as I can as a women and a nurse to advocate for breast cancer survivors; while helping to fund research and development of new treatments.”
One in every nine women in the United States will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer, based on the latest statistics from the American Cancer Society. It is the most common reportable cancer among women in Ohio, with an average of 8,235 new cases each year. Nearly two thousand (1,941) Ohioans die each year from Breast Cancer.
