FREMONT – A new feature on the website of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center provides a virtual behind-the-scenes tour of the Hayes Museum collections. By making use of the Center’s Objects Catalog, web users can see the Museum’s entire collection of artifacts.

Every object – those currently on display as well as those in storage – is listed in the searchable database. Web users not only can view thumbnail and enlarged images of an item, but also can read a detailed record about the object. Information displayed includes object name, catalog number, lexicon subcategory, description, dimensions, composition, provenance, and miscellaneous notes. Objects that have a direct association with a particular person or historical event list information about the event and person.

The Objects Catalog is accessible via the “Museum” pull-down menu at the top of the Hayes Presidential Center’s homepage www.rbhayes.org. Users can type in a keyword or phrase of their choosing and elect to search all of the records or just the image files. Other search options include: Click and Search, an alphabetical search using 12 different cataloging categories; Advanced Search, a search with user-defined criteria; and Random Images, a simple visual search of the entire catalog. A Help button assists users in navigating through the database.

“Creation of an online Objects Catalog allows the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center to share its artifact collection with a world audience. Serious researchers, authors, and other museums easily can search the detailed records to determine if the Center’s collections can aid in current research efforts or creation of exhibits. For the general public, the Objects Catalog is a chance to gain a better understanding of the extensive resources available at the Hayes Presidential Center,” said Executive Director Thomas Culbertson.

The online Objects Catalog involved more than four years of work by staff at the Hayes Presidential Center. It is a direct outgrowth of a multi-year cataloguing project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is home of the nation’s FIRST presidential library. The facility is located at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues, Fremont, Ohio. The Center is affiliated with the Ohio Historical Society. For other Museum resources and a complete list of year-round special events, visit the Hayes Presidential Center website .
