THE WILD IS CALLING AT THE TOLEDO MUSEUM OF ART
Toledo, Ohio—This summer is filled with wild animals and thick foliage at TMA. To celebrate the
upcoming collaborative festival, Arts Gone Wild, the Toledo Museum of Art opens two exhibitions that embrace the wild side of life. For additional information and images contact Sara Stacy, [email protected], 419-254-5771, ext. 7301.
NOVA (New Species): Paintings by Isabella Kirkland
Significance: Isabella Kirkland was, for a time, the only licensed female taxidermist in New York City. She adapted her love of recreating the animal form to her paintings. Each plant or
animal represented in her work is carefully researched and studied and all are painted at life-size to ensure accuracy of scale. Each of Kirkland’s paintings takes a year or more to
complete. Her style is evocative of Dutch still life paintings and explores the intersection between art and science; NOVA concentrates on examining recently discovered species.
Admission: Exhibition admission is FREE
Dates: On view July 18–October 5, 2008
Location: Gallery 18, Toledo Museum of Art
In Brightest Africa
Significance: Discover how Carl Akeley (1864-1926) transformed world
thinking about Africa in the early 20th century. Akeley was a
museum professional, naturalist, sculptor, and filmmaker. His
lifetime achievement was to raise awareness of the need to
preserve African wildlife.
The exhibit features loans from the Toledo Zoo—which
received 217 objects from Akeley’s widow in 1938—film
excerpts, field photographs, and our own Akeley sculpture.
Admission: Exhibition admission is FREE
