The Fred Merkle Baseball Memorabilia Collection is now on display in the Humanities Department at Main Library, 325 Michigan St. Fred Merkle graduated from Toledo Central High School in 1905 and became a first baseman in early Major League Baseball.  His career spans from 1907 to 1926, also playing in several World Series games.

September 23rd marks the 100th anniversary of a pennant-deciding game between the New York Giants and the Chicago Cubs.  Playing for the Giants, Fred Merkle, in a confusion of plays, failed to touch 2nd base and the run was nullified. The Giants and the Cubs were forced to replay the game to decide the pennant. On October 8, 1908, the Cubs beat the Giants and won the pennant.

On display at Main Library are baseball cards (also known as tobacco cards) from the early 1900's, sports and family photographs, a NY Giants pennant, and many more items. The display is on view now until September 30, courtesy of Fred Merkle’s grandniece, Sue Baxter, who lives in the area.
