The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library and the Western Lake Erie Historical Society team to present, “A Walking Guide to the Lake Erie Ships,” a model ship exhibit on view now through January 10, 2009 at Main Library, 325 Michigan St., in downtown Toledo.

Nine model ships all bearing a rich history are on display under or behind glass, including Cutty Sark, USCG Hamilton, David Dows, Bea Noble, Honey Bea, Erie Belle, a War Frigate, S.S. Greyhound, and S.S. Arrow. The models can be viewed throughout the spacious Main Library on all three levels of the building, while enjoying a self-guided walking tour. Walking guide maps are available at the information desk on the first floor of Main and along the walking stops.

The stories behind the original ships, for which the models were built, each tell a fascinating story of the shipping and sailing industry. Take the Cutty Sark, built in 1869 in Scotland and heavily used for the annual China to England tea trade, or the S.S. Greyhound, launched in 1902, a Toledo boat that made many moonlight round trips through the Maumee Bay waters. There’s the S.S. Arrow, built in 1895, which ran from Sandusky to Lake Erie Islands until a fire in 1922 severely damaged the ship, and many other fascinating stories. We hope to see you on the self-guided walking tour!
