Lincolns For Literacy Pennies Counted! Announcement on 4/17

The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library and Toledo Metro Federal Credit Union invite you to join them for a brief news conference at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 17 for the official announcement of the total number of pennies collected at Library branch locations to celebrate former United States President Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday. The announcement is scheduled at Toledo Metro, located at 1212 Adams St., where officials will display the pre-counted bags of pennies and dump them out.

All Library locations supplied collection boxes for patrons to donate their Lincoln pennies in February and March. The grand total raised in this Library effort will be donated to benefit the Read for Literacy (RFL) program.

Rumors abound that Lucas County Library patrons generously collected enough pennies to cover the costs for seven individuals to receive a full year each of free tutoring from Read for Literacy, said Jim Funk, RFL Director.

“This effort shows how valuable even a penny can be. The monies raised will dramatically change the lives of community residents who seek instruction on how to read. This fundraiser teaches us all an important lesson about helping our neighbors and the value of something as small as a penny,” said Funk.

The penny total will be matched dollar for dollar by the Stranahan Foundation, which has awarded RFL a three-year challenge grant that matches new giving up to $25,000 per year.
