The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library’s Friends of the Library (FOL) is scheduled to donate a total of 40 books by acclaimed Nobiel Prize and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison to benefit a select group of students at Stewart Academy for Girls and Polly Fox Academy.
A news conference is scheduled at the FOL-operated Classics Gift Shop at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 20 at Main Library, 325 Michigan St. The brief conference will feature Lee Heritage, The University of Toledo Senior Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Shapiro Lecture Series representative; Joan Durgin, Director of Program Development at Polly Fox Academy; Suzanne Muggy, Assistant Principal at Stewart Academy; Shanda Gore, chair of the President’s Lecture Series on Diversity at The University of Toledo, and Margi Levy, manager of the Library’s FOL. Twenty copies of Morrison’s latest novel a mercy will be donated to Polly Fox and 20 copies of the author’s Coretta Scott King Book Award youth work titled Remember: The Journey to School Integration will be donated to Stewart Academy.
The FOL book donation was prompted by an upcoming private event titled, An Evening with Toni Morrison Book Fun Extravaganza, organized by the President’s Lecture Series on Diversity at The University of Toledo. The Book Fun Extravaganza is scheduled to include a private meeting with some of the students prior to Morrison’s public lecture on Friday, April 24. The UT Edward Shapiro Distinguished Lecture Series is scheduled to present Morrison in Toledo for a free, public lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 24 at UT’s Savage Arena.
