US Sailing Safety at Sea Seminar to Educate Boaters
US SAILING SANCTIONED “SAFETY AT SEA” SEMINAR TO EDUCATE BOATERS WITH A DAY OF HANDS-ON BOAT EMERGENCY PREPARATION AS PRIME BOATING SEASON APPROACHES ON LAKE ERIE
North Cape Yacht Club (LaSalle, MI) April 20, 2009
How vulnerable are you should you have a boating emergency on the lake? Are you prepared if your boat’s engine gives out, or if you have a medical emergency, or experience a man over board situation? A local yacht club is offering a Safety at Sea seminar to teach you how. North Cape Yacht Club’s Sailing School is bringing the US Sailing Sanctioned “Safety at Sea” Seminar scheduled for April 25th to One Seagate Center, Toledo, OH.
USCG statistics indicate that 86% of boating related fatalities involve individuals who have had no boater’s safety training. The full day “Safety at Sea” Seminar, modeled after the US Naval Academy Midshipman training, will include live in water rescue demonstrations as well as keynote speakers talking about practical ways to enjoy a safe boating season on the Great Lakes.
Toledo is fortunate to have been selected as one of only five seminar locations around the country this year. Pre registrations indicate that attendees are coming from all over the country in addition to the regional draw that is expected. Any boater interested in attending Saturday should visit www.ncyc.net to pre-register for this week’s event.
A significant attraction during the seminar will be live in-water rescue demonstrations by both a USCG helicopter, crewed boat rescue, as well as a singlehanded man overboard rescues. Various visual distress flares will be demonstrated and compared. The demonstrations will take place on the Maumee River. Additional Coast Guard rescue boats and personnel will be on hand demonstrating and discussing rescue capabilities and limitations.
Distinguished keynote speakers include John Rousmaniere, who has logged over 35,000 miles sailing long passages, cruises, and ocean races. His book, Annapolis Book of Seamanship has been one of America’s standard sailing manuals for 25 years. John Rousmaniere will be talking about the latest developments in crew overboard prevention and recovery, heavy weather sailing, life on board during long passages, and disaster avoidance. Assisting John Rousmaniere is former Commodore Naval Academy Sailing Squadron, Capt. John Bonds, USN (Ret.) also Past Chairman of US Sailing. Captain Bonds will cover water survival and flotation, boat and crew prep for offshore boating, abandon ship procedures, calling for help, damage control and repair, and giving and receiving aid. Dr. Rob Amsler an avid sailor with a family practice in Clinton Township, MI will discuss how to prepare a medical kit and offer medical assistance in the event of an on-board injury. Bryan Tilley, a meteorologist with the NWS station in White Lake Township, will provide an update on the latest weather service resources for boaters. Finally, Freighter Captain
George Haynes describes the view from the bridge of ocean and lake going commercial freighters and discusses how to share the waterways and commercial right of ways when boating near big ships.
This seminar is open to the public and registration is available at the door. The seminar runs from 8:00am – 5:00pm on Saturday, April 25th at OneSeaGate Building Auditorium. All boaters are encouraged to attend this event.
