Paperweight Collectors Association, Inc. 2009 Biennial Convention
Toledo, Ohio is the host city for an international gathering of glass paperweight collectors, artist-makers, and dealers from around the world Wednesday, May 20 through Saturday, May 23, with the theme: “Midwest Weights – Their History and Charm.” This biennial Convention of Paperweight Collectors, Inc. will be held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, the principal venue for convention activities. The Paperweight Collector’s Association, Inc., founded in 1953, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to appreciating and collecting glass paperweights. Its core mission is to promote education and increase knowledge about glass paperweights, their makers, and the medium from which they are created. The convention will open on Wednesday evening with the very popular Artist’s Fair. Here, all of the registered artist-makers will have an opportunity to display and share their latest creations and innovations with attendees. It will be promptly followed by the opening of the Dealer’s Fair, a colorful and tantalizing bazaar of literally thousands of paperweights: contemporary, vintage, and antique, an opportunity for convention attendees to view and/or purchase as well as socialize with fellow collectors. A broad variety of educational sessions covering Midwest Glass and related themes will be presented. Illustrating those presentations will be a large, representative display, in the convention venue, of work by Midwest paperweight makers spanning an extensive period of history. Many of the speakers are world-class experts on glass paperweights and are the authors of books or articles on the subject. Break-out luncheon sessions will provide an opportunity for smaller groups to interact intimately with artists as they discuss their latest work and trends in contemporary paperweight design and execution. Toledo, an epicenter of midwest glass production, is also the site of the Toledo Museum of Art’s magnificent and innovative Glass Pavilion. These were key factors prompting selection of this city for the 2009 PCA, Inc. convention. An afternoon at The Glass Pavilion will be a key attraction for convention attendees as they will be able to view the glass collection, hear presentations by museum personnel, and observe hot glass demonstrations in the studio/shop. Area residents are invited to visit the Dealer’s Fair at the convention hotel, a very popular attraction in prior conventions, Saturday afternoon from noon to 5:00 PM for a nominal admission fee. Visitors are free to make purchases during that opportunity, interact with paperweight collectors, artists, and dealers, and attend a “Paperweight Primer” lecture. Multiple free awards of paperweight gift/prizes to the public throughout the afternoon will make some attendees feel especially rewarded for their visit.
