Posted: Wednesday, September 2, 2009 by: Brian Trauring | Category: Community Interest

The stakes could not be higher. The City of Toledo faces a mountain of increasing challenges including decaying infrastructure, increasing unemployment, and declining population. The next mayor must attempt to demonstrate a vision necessary to lead the city’s citizens through troubled times and turn economic hardships into prosperity.

Tuesday, September 8th, the five leading candidates will try to convince you and other voters that they can meet the test. Moderated by 13abc’s Diane Larson, three well-respected and seasoned journalists will ask for specifics about how they would meet these and other challenges. Anchor Lee Conklin, host of Sunday’s Conklin & Co. program, anchor and political reporter Bill Hormann and longtime Cumulus News Director London Mitchell of K-100 will be asking questions designed to bring new information to light. Selected questions from viewers will also be included as submitted through 13abc.com or through Twitter and Facebook. There will be an opportunity for candidates to ask questions directly of one another as part of the format.

This one-hour debate features candidates Mike Bell, D. Michael Collins, Ben Konop, Jim Moody and Keith Wilkowski.

The debate takes place at Bowsher High School’s new auditorium beginning at 7:00pm and the public is invited to attend. Tuesday’s debate will be televised live on 13abc and streamed live on 13abc.com and Toledo.com. It will be repeated on seven Cumulus Radio Stations the following Sunday at times to be announced later.

The debate is sponsored by 13abc and co-sponsored by Toledo City Paper, Toledo.com, Cumulus Broadcasting, and Press Club of Toledo. The Press Club invites all attending the debate to a post-debate reception at the high school’s cafeteria immediately after the debate closes.

The school is located at 3548 S Detroit Ave in Toledo.

The mayoral primary will be decided exactly one week following the 13abc debate on September 15th with the two top vote-getters in the primary facing off in the general election on November 3rd.
