ALMA headlines a night of open mic “nu-sense”, hosted by local poet, artist, and event coordinator, Natural, in the newly renovated Clazel Theatre. Open mic on the stage, and visual art in the foyer. Doors open @ 8pm, stage performances start around 9pm. $3 to enter, but there’s no charge if you’re performing on stage. An eclectic and exciting mix of ideas and action executed by talented local artists of the “419”!

“Winter Legacies” @ The Toledo Museum of Art, The Great Gallery

This performance will be ALMA’s 6th appearance in this annual holiday event hosted by the Toledo Museum of Art in the Great Gallery. Our program this year features new musical performances and also performances by our ALMA apprentices, as well as, ALMA principal members. This concert is free and open to the public.

“Soul Djembe Drumming” with Yaya Kabo @ Integration Yoga Studio

ALMA Artistic Director and Senegalese Master Drummer Yaya Kabo provides a 4-week series of classes for all students of djembe drumming. Classes are $25 per session or $75 for all four classes prepaid. Pre-register by calling 419-381-2755. Come learn Djembe & Dun Dun, traditional West African drumming styles, techniques & rhythms. For beginners to advanced! Bring your drum!
Dance Classes:
“Intro to West African Dance”
Tuesday Evenings in December @ Integration Yoga Studio
December 1st thru December 29th, 2009 ~ 7pm – 8:15pm

The classes are $10 per individual session, but with pre-registration, four classes are only $35. Participants are encouraged to pre-register by calling, 419-A-OM-YOGA (266-9642).
The class will be instructed by ALMA Drum & Dance members Allison Kodeih & Pevely, and Yaya Kabo. Each class features a warm up, traditional dance technique, choreography, along with, live drumming. No experience is necessary and all are welcome. Children with adults are welcome, and group discounts are available.
ALMA Dance Experience, LLC is a group of professional musicians and dancers bonded in the study, performance and sharing of traditional West African Drum & Dance, and Modern Dance. ALMA exists to celebrate dance and music, to bring dance and music to everyone, to celebrate the non-traditional artist, and to capitalize on the talents each individual brings to the group, to the stage and to the classroom. ALMA is also dedicated to collaboration; working with other artists to build a larger dance and music community.
ALMA Dance Experience has been a company since 2003, but the core of our group has been working together for a decade or more, and among our group members we have multiple decades of professional experience in a wide variety of music, dance, and performance styles. As a group we are committed to artistic excellence through continuous study, performance, and sharing of our art forms.
