Mr. Schmidt has a BS from BGSU and a MS from Illinois State University where he was involved in the early American Studio Glass Movement. He has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ohio Arts Council, and been recognized in many exhibitions, collections and publications. He has been an Instructor/ Lecturer, and Acting Department Head of several institutions including California State University in Chico, California, Cleveland Institute of Art, Ohio University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Toledo Museum of Art.
Schmidt’s sculptures, usually fabricated in glass, metal, and/or stone, are found at the Smithsonian Institution, The Rochester Institute of Technology, the Corning Museum of Glass, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Toledo Museum of Art. He is noted for his detail, design, and careful planning of scale.
Ms. Messenger has a BFA in Glass from Cleveland Institute of Art, and studied at Pilchuck Glass School, Penland School of Crafts, and Toledo Museum of Art. Her love of flowers, and gardens led to developing a distinct impressionistic style of floral landscapes using glass murrinis to represent flowers. Her first step is to create a murrini or glass cane with layers of color and an interior shape of a flower. Cross sections of the canes are cut and layered into floral compositions or millefiori, blown into shape and a final layer of clear glass finishes the piece.
Ms. Messenger’s art glass is individually designed and hand blown incorporating handcrafted murrinis, colored glass powders and chips to produce veils of color and forms from nature. Her intention is to “evoke a felling of serenity and solitude, and a homage to nature.” Her work is available in American galleries and is found in private collections throughout the United States, Japan, France and Germany.
