The Toledo Symphony welcomes the community to celebrate 135 of the regions finest high school musicians. Sunday, February 7, 2010 at 3:00pm. Pre-concert recitals will begin at 2:20. This concert is free and open to the public. Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle The Toledo Youth Orchestra (TYO) presents the Concerto Competition Winners Sunday, February 7 at 3 PM in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle. Come early at 2:20 PM and listen to the runners’ up Robert Myak, Luke Schultz, and Andrew Zeller. They will be performing their concertos with piano accompaniment in the Peristyle before the concert. Music from Russia highlights the February concert of the Toledo Youth Orchestra and the TYO Sinfonietta. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Dance of the Tumblers and Gliere’s Russian Sailor’s Dance are virtuoso showpieces that show off each of the ensembles at their brilliant best, while Tchaikovsky’s Marche Slave marshals the entire force of the orchestra into a powerful climax. Concerto Competition Winner Sam Chang, violin, will be featured in Sergei Prokofiev’s dramatic second violin concerto. The TYO Sinfonietta will also feature two works that are classics of the string orchestra literature – selections from Mendelssohn’s second Sinfonia and Gustav Holst’s Brook Green Suite. A special treat – and a special challenge – for the TYO is the regional premiere of Monstro de Brasil by Michael Schelle, described by conductor Kenneth Thompson as the hardest piece the TYO has yet performed. Schelle draws together pop culture influences, improvisational techniques, and driving rhythms to create an exuberant romp. The 2009-2010 season also marks the debut of the Toledo Youth Orchestra Sinfonietta. The Sinfonietta was formed this fall to accommodate the growing demand for youth orchestra involvement in Northwest Ohio and to elevate the level of playing in both groups. This year, the TYO and TYO Sinfonietta experienced the largest turnout for auditions to date. There are 135 students combined in the TYO and TYO Sinfonietta. Students are represented by 28 area schools, grades 9-12. Students drive to Monday night rehearsals from as far away as Findlay, Norwalk and Blissfield. This experience is made possible by support from ProMedica, the Toledo Public Schools, and the Toledo Museum of Art. The TYO is directed by Ken Thompson; the Sinfonietta is directed by Wasim Hawary--with assistant conductors Mark Irwin and Bryan Troutman.
