The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo Announces Carnick, Norman, Onodera Exhibition
The Carnick, Norman, Onodera Exhibition will be on display February 1 thru March 12, 2010. The public is invited to join us for a reception for the exhibition on Friday, February 12 from 6 to 8 pm.
The artworks from these three very different artists interact in the Parkwood Gallery to create an environment that is both sensual and uneasy. Andrea Carnick’s acrylic paintings are large and abstract, stormy and moody. But too, they are soft and soothing, like the tranquility that comes with, or follows a storm. Arranged in pleasant bouquets, the scanned collages that Beverly Norman creates are soft and subtle, yet inherently morbid. Composed of digital scans of dead birds, butterflies, and fallen flower petals, Norman’s digital works toy with our perception of both death and beauty, especially by forcing them to interact. The experimental jewelry of Masako Onodera rounds out the show, adding a three dimensional element that too is tender, yet raw. Onodera’s wraps, rings, and broaches border on stand-alone sculpture that is still, yet appears in motion. Composed of wool, stone, and hand-shaped metal and glass, many of her works bring to mind odd forms of beauty in nature, seemingly intestinal, or like a mussel-ridden rope; there is a disturbing growth in her work that is at once intriguing in form, and disturbing in effect.
The Parkwood Gallery is open Monday thru Friday 8:30 am – 4:30pm and is located at 1838 Parkwood Avenue, Suite 120 off of Monroe Street in Downtown Toledo.
