Toledo Rep's Madge Levinson Honored With 2010 National Community Theatre Award
The American Association of Community Theatre (AACT) has named local theatre artist Madge Levinson as a 2010 recipient of its Robert E. Gard Superior Volunteer Award, recognizing her 40 years of service to the Toledo Repertoire Theatre. Mrs. Levinson has been active in Toledo theatre since moving to the area from Chicago in 1969. Since then, she has acted, directed, and organized volunteers for several performing groups in the Glass City, most notably the Toledo Repertoire Theatre. She is a frequent performer at the Rep, and currently directs its Young Playgoers program. “Madge is a Toledo community treasure,” said Lee Krähenbühl, the Rep’s Artistic Director. “She is the model of both of professional-level talent and real artistic community service, and we are delighted that she has been nationally recognized.” Most recently, Mrs. Levinson appeared in a featured role in the Rep’s production of Leading Ladies. “At the closing performance, Madge was greeted with applause when her character first walked onstage, before she had said a word,” Krähenbühl noted. “That’s a testament to the well-deserved affection and respect that Toledo has for her.” In recent years, Mrs. Levinson has also appeared in feature films, including Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino and Drew Barrymore’s Whip It. The national award will be presented during the AACT International Festival, June 22-27, in Venice, Florida.
