HUMANE OHIO PET FOOD BANK HELPS KEEP PETS WITH THEIR FAMILIES
K100, Pet Supplies “Plus” and Genoa Bank team up for pet food drive. Goal: 10,000 pounds of pet food!

TOLEDO, Ohio, Feb. 23, 2010 – Pet overpopulation is a huge problem nationwide, and more and more pets are being surrendered to animal shelters or simply abandoned as a result of foreclosure, unemployment and the economic downturn. Animal shelters, rescue groups and animal control facilities are already overcrowded, and a large increase in owner surrenders can lead to more animals being euthanized simply for lack of a home.

Humane Ohio, a local non-profit organization, offers two solutions to the pet overpopulation problem in our community. The group offers low-cost spay/neuter to all area pet parents, and they offer a special, even lower rate to pet parents on federal assistance. The group also runs the Humane Ohio Pet Food Bank which makes free pet food available to pet parents in need in Lucas, Wood and Monroe Counties.

“The Humane Ohio Pet Food Bank makes sure that pets in our community do not go hungry, it helps pet parents keep their pets even in tough financial times, and it helps ensure that pet parents do not have to share their own meal with their pet and go hungry themselves,” says Humane Ohio Clinic Director Lisa Hochradel.

In an effort to support the community and keep pets with their families, K100, Pet Supplies "Plus" and Genoa Bank are teaming up on a pet food drive to benefit the Humane Ohio Pet Food Bank! This special pet food drive will take place from March 1st -13th. During this time, Humane Ohio hopes to collect at least 10,000 pounds of dog and cat food! People who wish to support the pet food drive can donate food at any area Pet Supplies “Plus” store or Genoa Bank branch. As the grand finale, K100 will be broadcasting live from the Pet Supplies “Plus” store at 5315 Airport Highway (at Reynolds) from 3 – 5 pm on Saturday, March 13th.

The following Genoa Bank locations are participating in the pet food drive:
801 Main St. (Genoa)
3201 Navarre Ave. (Oregon)
703 Conant St. (Maumee)
24950 West State Route 51 (Millbury)
9920 Olde US 20 (Rossford)

The following Pet Supplies “Plus” locations are participating in the pet food drive:
4115 Talmadge (Toledo)
5315 Airport Highway (Toledo)
849 W. Alexis (Toledo)
6923 W. Central Ave. (Toledo)
9520 Olde US 20 (Rossford)
859 N. Telegraph Rd. (Monroe, MI)

Humane Ohio relies solely on pet food donations from the community and local pet supply stores like Pet Supplies “Plus” to keep the pet food bank stocked. Dry and wet dog and cat food donations can also be dropped off at Humane Ohio, 3131 Tremainsville (Toledo 43613), anytime between 7:30 am – 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.

People who are in need of low-cost spay/neuter or free pet food should call Humane Ohio at 419-266-5607 or visit www.humaneohio.org for more information and details. The Humane Ohio pet food bank also makes bird food and small animal food (like hamster) available when possible, and helps provide food to people who are caring for free roaming cats and implementing TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return).

Humane Ohio operates a non-profit low-cost spay/neuter clinic and pet food bank. Their spay/neuter clinic serves all area pet parents, people caring for free roaming cats, animal shelters and rescue groups. The non-profit organization can offer low-cost spay/neuter prices because private donations and grants help subsidize the true, higher cost of spay/neuter procedures. Humane Ohio believes that all animals should receive the highest quality veterinary care possible even if the services rendered are at a reduced cost. Their clinic uses state of the art instruments and equipment, all spay/neuter surgeries are performed by qualified, licensed vets (DVMs) and every patient receives a brief physical exam and quality pain medication.
