Lourdes lecture Features House of Representative Historian
The fourth annual Lourdes College Distinguished Lecture in American History and Culture will be held on Monday April 12 at 7 p.m. in the Franciscan Theatre & Conference Center. Dr. Robert V. Remini, Historian of the United States House of Representatives, will serve as guest speaker. His presentation will discuss Andrew Jackson and Indian Removal.
As seventh President of the United States, Andrew Jackson is credited with shaping the modern Democratic Party. Often seen as a defender of the common man, his presidency is also considered controversial because of his policy toward Native Americans. In 1830, during his second year as President, Jackson forced the Indian Removal Act through a reluctant Congress. As a result, more than 45,000 American Indians from the eastern United States were pushed west across the Mississippi River.
Guest speaker Dr. Robert V. Remini is an award-winning American Historian. He is Professor of History Emeritus and Research Professor of Humanities Emeritus at the University of Illinois in Chicago. He won the National Book Award for the third volume of his biography of Andrew Jackson. In addition to his numerous works on President Jackson and the Jacksonian Era, he has written biographies of Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren and Daniel Webster.
In 2005, Dr. Remini was appointed Historian of the United States House of Representatives. Prior to his appointment, he was commissioned by Librarian of Congress James H. Billington to write the first comprehensive narrative history of the House of Representatives as provided by the House Awareness and Preservation Act of 1999. The Society for History of the Federal Government awarded his work The House: The History of the House of Representatives with the George Pendleton Prize.
The lecture is free and open to the public. It is sponsored in part by a grant from the Ohio Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. For more information, contact Dr. Mary Stockwell, Chair, Department of History, at 419-824-3741.
