#1 on the NY Times Bestsellers List for 40 consecutive weeks

On Friday, April 16, Lourdes College’s Speaker Series returns with renowned author Wm. Paul Young. With more than 6 million copies in print, Young’s self-published novel The Shack was a USA Today best-seller and was number one on the New York Times list for 40 consecutive weeks.

Originally penned as a Christmas gift to his six children, The Shack shares the transformative tale of friend, husband and father Mackenzie (Mack) Philips whose daughter is kidnapped and murdered during a family camping trip. Upon returning to the Shack – where his daughter’s clothing was found after her disappearance – Mack comes to grips with his despair, ultimately finding strength and enlightenment through characters representing God and the Trinity.

Young’s life has been anything but ordinary. Born in Alberta, Canada to missionary parents, he spent the early years of his childhood living among the Dani tribe in the highlands of New Guinea. He then went on to attend primary and secondary school in Canada, eventually earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Religion from Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon. A husband, father of six and grandfather of three, Young says “I have owned businesses and worked for others in diverse industries, from insurance to construction, venture capital companies to telecom, contract work to food processing; I have worked any job that would help feed and house my growing family.” Throughout his life he has also been a writer, both personally and professionally. He has written musical lyrics, poetry and short stories for friends and family and has extensively written for a variety of businesses.

The Speaker Series presentation will be held in the Franciscan Theater of Lourdes College at 1 p.m. Admission is FREE and open to the public with a valid ticket. To pick up tickets, visit the Franciscan Center box office or call 419-824-3999.
