On Tuesday, April 13, the Lourdes College Theater Vision program will conclude its 25th season with the musical Nobody’s Perfect. This unique musical is performed simultaneously in spoken English and American Sign Language and is the first production ever in the United States to tour with a built-in open-caption system.

Based on the children’s book written by Academy Award® and Golden Globe® winning actress Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God), Nobody’s Perfect is the story of fourth grade students Megan and Alexis. Megan thinks that new student Alexis is practically perfect and has it all – beauty, brains and athletic skill. Though Megan tries to be nice to her, Alexis is anything but friendly, making Megan wonder, “Does she not like me because I’m deaf?” When the two are forced to collaborate on a science project, Megan discovers what Alexis is hiding – she has an autistic brother. Through this realization, they form an inspiring bond and friendship.
In conjunction with the performance of Nobody’s Perfect, Very Special Arts of Ohio will present the Theater Vision Day Positively Perfect: Communicating through the Arts. During this 75-minute interactive workshop, students will have an opportunity to expand their theater experience by exploring ways to improve nonverbal communication skills and learn about the Deaf culture and American Sign Language.

“It is impressive that we were able to get this grant and it is thanks not only to the fact that we’re presenting Nobody’s Perfect, but also because we’re involving Derek Mortland, a presenter from Very Special Arts Ohio, in a Theater Vision Day that deals with nonverbal communication including methods used by the deaf culture,” shares Jule Horn, Theater Vision Director.

Funding for the Theater Vision performance and activity is provided in part by the Challenge America: Reaching Every Community Fast-Track grant from the National Endowment of Arts. The grant provides $10,000 in support for accessible theater performances in Sylvania and Elyria, Ohio.

Audiences can see Nobody’s Perfect at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Tickets $8 per student. Call 419-824-3986 or visit www.lourdes.edu/theater for more information.
