A Salute to American Heroes: A Letter from Home
The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library is proud to announce the 2010 Ruth Blank Venner and Mary Jane Blank McCormick Essay Contest. This year’s theme is A Salute to American Heroes: A Letter from Home. Contest rules: Write a letter to your hero expressing your thanks. How do they inspire you? Why do you think they are heroic? Tell us about them and salute your American Hero! Now is your chance to really wow us with a letter to your hero, who may be far away or someone close by. Your hero may also be someone who lived long ago, or someone you know today.
This year’s essay contest is a 500 word maximum and is open to grades K through 12. Grade level essay categories are as follows: K-2nd grade, 3rd -5th, 6th -8th, and 9th –12th. Prizes will be awarded to winning essay entrants: 1st place $200, 2nd place $100, 3rd place $50 and 6 honorable mentions will be awarded $25 each. Prizes are provided by the Ruth Blank Venner and Mary Jane Blank McCormick Memorial Project of the Friends of the Library.
Contest essay forms are available at all Library branch locations, at Main Library, and on the Library’s Bookmobile (Outreach Services). Essays must be turned in by Saturday, May 8, 2010. No entries will be accepted after May 8.
The late Ruth Blank Venner was a past president of the Friends of the Library and an active member. Mrs. Venner, who died in 1996, was married 44 years to the well-known television news anchor Frank Venner. Mrs. Venner’s brother Leon W. Blank, as a way to honor his sister’s memory and to promote reading among youth, established the Ruth Blank Venner Memorial Project of the Friends of the Library beginning in 1996. This year, 2010, Mr. Blank added the memory of his other sisterMary Jane Blank McCormick to the essay contest and FOL Memorial Project. McCormick died in 2009.
