National Library Week April 11-17, 2010
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance presented by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.
The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library is proud to celebrate National Library Week with festivities and programs for all ages. Most library locations will offer family-oriented programs to celebrate the week. *Please log on to toledolibrary.org and search for fun National Library Week activities and programs throughout the system.
Fun highlights:
“I Love My Library” Bike Giveaway – Visit your library during National Library Week for a chance to win a children’s bicycle. Fill out an entry form and you could be a winner! You may enter once each day during the Week. Bicycles provided by our generous National Library Week sponsor, Meijer.
Treasure Hunt @ Your Library (April 12-30) – Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. Find a geocache hidden in one of our libraries before April 30 and be entered in a contest to win a handheld GPS (Global Positioning System) unit. A Letterboxing option is also available. Visit your library for details. Geocache prizes provided by our generous sponsor, The Library Legacy Foundation.
Geocaching – What’s That?? Saturday, April 10, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Huntington Room/Main Library, 325 Michigan St. (All ages welcome) – Geocaching, which celebrates its 10-year anniversary in April, is a high-tech game of treasure-hunting played using a GPS device. Plus, it’s a great family activity. This program will feature a Skype interview with a well-known geocache expert, Andy “Head Hard Hat” Smith, an introduction to the game and alternative ways to participate such as Letterboxing. The program will conclude with an actual treasure hunt. Raffle prizes provided by The Library Legacy Foundation include both a child’s and adult’s GPS unit.
