Give Them Shelter is expected to be the organization’s largest and most important fundraising event of the year and will enable Family Promise to deliver critical services to Toledo’s homeless families. The recent recession has made Family Promise’s mission — to break the cycle of homelessness and end the disruption it causes families with children – all the more imperative.
Elizabeth Tore, Executive Director of Family Promise of Greater Toledo notes that the number of families experiencing temporary homelessness due to a parent’s job loss soars during a depressed economy. “Presently, families make up 40% of the homeless population. In fact, one out of four homeless people is a child. In response to this crisis, Family Promise has assembled and mobilized all kinds of community resources, from churches to volunteers to social services.” Give Them Shelter, she adds, “is crucial to building both community awareness of the problem and the funds to support our volunteer effort. We’re depending on individual and group walkers, volunteers and sponsors to drive fabulous turnout for the event.”
Well-behaved dogs (on leashes) are also welcome on the walk.

A Few Words About Family Promise of Greater Toledo
Family Promise works in partnership with faith-based communities to reach out to underserved people throughout the region. Originally known as Interfaith Hospitality Network, we embrace a non-denominational approach that serves all religions equally. Homelessness doesn’t discriminate and neither do we. By offering emergency shelter where families can take showers, clean clothes, caring for young children and prepare employment applications and other paperwork, we’re giving others in need the chance to change their lives, not simply sustain them.
