The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library’s Humanities Department is proud to announce its latest exhibit,
All that Glitters: The Fabulous Fakery of Costume Jewelry, on view beginning tomorrow, June 3 through August 31, 2010 at Main Library, 325 Michigan St.

The display, located in the Humanities Department, features a variety of costume jewelry from companies such as Park Lane, Whiting & Davis, Kenneth Jay Lane, Monet, Joan Rivers, Bakelite, Avon, Eisenberg, Coro and Murano.

Exhibit pieces include necklaces, bracelets, earrings and holiday pins spanning several decades. Of special interest is the Obama Inaugural simulated pearl necklace designed by Kenneth Jay Lane, a VIP gift to guests at the Creative Coalition’s Inaugural Ball.

Also displaying a dressy iridescent rhinestone and gold filigree multi-tiered necklace with matching drop earrings - in its original presentation box.

The works of familiar designer names such as Kenneth Jay Lane are featured. Lane, acclaimed by The New York Times as “the man who made costume jewelry chic,” started creating jewelry in the early 1960s. The jewelry of comedian/entrepreneur Joan Rivers is also on display. Rivers has shared with media that the whole point of costume jewelry is to have the fun of dressing like a wealthy woman with virtually none of the worry or expense. Her Joan Rivers Classics Collection is sold on the QVC Channel.

Stop by this FREE and open to the public Library exhibit and learn much more, such as the early beginnings of the company Avon, when Bakelite became popular, and when Eisenberg, founded in 1914 as a manufacturer of women’s apparel, started making fine crystal and rhinestone jewelry.
