MICKY DOLENZ, lead singer of THE MONKEES

As drummer and lead singer for the 1960s band The Monkees, and star of The Monkees television show, Micky Dolenz has sold more than 65 million records worldwide. He has had a long and varied career as an actor, musician, director and producer. Now, Dolenz brings the band’s popular songs to Lakeside, including “I’m a Believer” and “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone.”

Dolenz started his show business career at the age of 10, starring in the 1956 television series “Circus Boy.” In his teens, he guest-starred on a number of television shows and learned to play guitar, singing songs by The Rolling Stones, The Animals and Chuck Berry.

In 1965, Dolenz responded to an ad announcing auditions for a new television show about a rock ‘n’ roll band. Dolenz was chosen out of 400 applicants to star alongside Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork and Davy Jones. Though he had never played drums, he was cast as drummer and lead vocalist in the band created for the show, The Monkees. Though the show only aired for two years, it enjoyed high ratings. In 1967, the show received two Emmy Awards, for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Comedy Series.

The Monkees parted ways in the 1970s. Today, Dolenz continues to entertain, acting on stage and in film and touring.
