Plein Air Artists and Wooden Boats Return to Lakeside
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lakeside, Ohio - A collaborative effort that blends the artistic expression of the Ohio Plein Air Society (OPAS) and the craftsmanship of the Lakeside Wooden Boat Society (LWBS) will create one of Lakeside’s most unique weekends of the Chautauqua season from July 16-18.
This three-day event will host more than 55 artists from across the state as they paint in the annual OPAS Paintout. The artists will paint throughout Lakeside and the surrounding area; yellow flags will designate the artists. The term “en plein air,” means painting in “in the open air.”
On Sunday, July 18, the Paintout will coincide with the Lakeside Wooden Boat Show as plein air artists and children, for a small fee of $2, are invited to paint along the lakefront from 1-3 p.m. This children’s event is sponsored by the C. Kirk Rhein, Jr. Center for the Living Arts. A Wet Paint Sale and Show, held on the Pavilion lawn from 3-5 p.m., will showcase original paintings that were completed by OPAS artists during the weekend.
The Lakeside waterfront will transform into an outdoor showroom of classic wooden boats as these cruisers line the dock and lawn of Hotel Lakeside at the annual Lakeside Wooden Boat Show from noon-5 p.m. on Sunday, July 18. There will be more than 30 wooden boats, each classified based on the year the boat was built. There will be historic boats (prior to 1918), antique boats (1919-1942), classic boats (1943-1975) early contemporary (1976-1984) and late contemporary (the past 25 years).
There will be many activities throughout the day, including Sunday Brunch at the Hotel Lakeside Dining Room and Café, which overlooks the Boat Show, from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; a variety of picnic food, provided by Travelers Cafe, for purchase in Central Park from noon-5 p.m.; and tours of the Coast Guard’s 32’ Cutter beginning at 1 p.m. on the dock. Blue Lunch, an eight-piece band from Cleveland, will perform 1950s swing and Chicago blues at the Steele Memorial Bandstand from 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Rick Dziak of Marblehead, Ohio, and Jim White of Maumee, Ohio, collaborated on the creation of the Lakeside Wooden Boat Show 18” x 24” poster, now available for $12 at Artists-N-Cahoots. White sketched the image, and Dziak finished the masterpiece with oil paints. White ran an advertising agency for more than 50 years in the Toledo Area. Dziak is an award-winning artist and has a signature membership in Oil Painters of America. He and his wife Mary own Dziak Gallery in Marblehead.
The original oil painting, known is “Morning Rush Hour” and valued at more than $4,000, is on display at Artists-N-Cahoots. The painting was donated by Dziak Gallery to the LWBS. The LWBS will provide an opportunity drawing of the painting throughout the season and will announce the winner at the Chautauqua Season Closing Ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 5. Tickets are available at Artists-N-Cahoots, $5 per ticket or $20 for five tickets.
Three-hour gate passes are available at the Lakeside gate for $5.25. The Lakeside Wooden Boat Show event is free once inside the gates of Lakeside. Free parking is available at Danbury High School near the fence by the football field (cars must be registered at the Hoover Auditorium Ticket Office). There is no shuttle service provided to or from the school. To park on the grounds, there is a $7.25 auto fee.
