JAMIE FARR: Library’s fourth Sight and Sound documentary
The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library is proud to announce the third documentary of its exciting new Sight and Sound project, which seeks to interview pioneering local figures during their lifetimes and capture them in documentary form. This recent profile focuses on the life of Toledo’s native son, actor Jamie Farr.
The first person to be interviewed and filmed for the project’s debut 2008 documentary was legendary jazz vocalist Jon Hendricks, who is known in the music world as the Father of Vocalese. Last fall, Dick Anderson, Chairman Emeritus of the Board of The Andersons, Inc., was the second profile of the series. And, the third feature was the historic Toledo Mud Hens announcer Frank Gilhooley.
Tom Walton, retired Toledo Blade editor, interviewed Anderson, Gilhooley, and Farr for the Sight and Sound documentaries. Farr’s interview covers his childhood growing up in Toledo and his celebrated career on M*A*S*H.
Jamie Farr was born Jameel Joseph Farah on July 1, 1934, in Toledo, the only son of Samuel, a meat cutter/grocer, and Jamelia, a seamstress.
His acting career began at age 11 when Jamie won $2 in a local talent contest. He graduated from Woodward High School with honors and was named most outstanding student, having served as class president for three years.
Jamie became a full member of the cast of the No. 1 show on television, M*A*S*H*, playing Corporal Klinger; he even directed an episode.
Some of his favorite personal tributes include the park in Toledo named in his honor, The Ellis Island Medal of Honor, and the prestigious 2000 LPGA Commissioner's Award. Jamie's greatest passion aside from acting is golf, and for over twenty years he has helped sponsor the nationally acclaimed Jamie Farr LPGA Golf Classic, raising over 4 million dollars to children’s charities in Northwest Ohio.
He married the "joy" of his life, Joy Richards, in 1963. They remain happily married and enjoy a close family relationship with son, Jonas and daughter, Yvonne.
