Avoid the Summer Slide at the Imagination Station
Afraid your kids will suffer from the Summer Slide?
Imagination Station offers cure and fun – wrapped into one! The Summer Slide is a phenomenon that occurs when kids are not actively working on academics over their summer vacation. Research has shown that students can lose up to 3 months of learning, which means that next year’s teachers will spend the first part of the school year reviewing previously taught concepts before introducing new ones. “Educators spend a good deal of time reviewing in the first month of school rather than hitting the ground running,” said Pauline LoCascio, retired Toledo Public School teacher and Imagination Station educator. “This phenomenon is evident from the deer in headlights look on the students’ faces the first few weeks of school.”
The best way to keep your child ahead of the summer slide is to expose them to growth opportunities (like Imagination Station), encourage them to read, share board games, help with family shopping and keep a journal or picture record of family excursions. It doesn’t mean making your child attend summer school, it’s just making certain that they have a well-rounded activity schedule that engages, educates and excites them.
“A visit to Imagination Station offers a practical and exciting way to keep away the summer slide,” said Sloan Eberly, Public Program Manager for Imagination Station. “It incorporates learning into your child’s summertime activities, allowing them to use problem-solving skills while having fun. It’s a perfect way to encourage children to keep on learning all summer long.”
Imagination Station’s Science Studio gives children the opportunity to work hands-on with our scientists, doing experiments and testing ideas. The Extreme Science Theater showcases those hands-on opportunities in a bigger, bolder experience using products, chemicals and experiments that you can’t find or do at home or in the classroom. Even our Little KIDSPACE Science Studio gives preschoolers a jumpstart on school with special activities designed to explore the fundamentals of science in fun and engaging ways.
The Imagination Station, located on the downtown Toledo riverfront, is a science center dedicated to delivering science and technology based programming to youth and their families throughout Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.
