FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lakeside, Ohio - The Spinners will perform in Lakeside's Hoover Auditorium at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7.
The Spinners are a soul music group from Detroit, Mich. Although the group formed in 1954, they did not perform under the name, The Spinners, until 1961. First called The Domingoes, the group was made up of Billy Henderson, Henry Fambrough, Pervis Jackson, C.P. Spencer and James Edwards, who only lasted a few weeks with the group before being replaced by Bobbie Smith.
Other past members include George Dixon, Edgar “Chico” Edwards, G.C. Cameron, Philippé Wynne, Jonathan Edwards, Harold “Spike” Bonhart and Joe Stubbs.
The group is currently made up of original members Fambrough and Smith, as well as Charlton Washington, Marvin Taylor and Jessie Robert Peck.
The Spinners’ first hit was “That’s What Girls Are Made For,” which peaked at number 27 on the charts in August of 1961. The group was assigned to the Motown label in 1963 and in 1964 they made their debut at the Apollo Theater. Their song, “I’ll Always Love You,” hit number 35 in 1965 and “Truly Yours” was a big hit on the Billboard R&B chart in 1966. In 1970 their song “It’s a Shame,” composed by Stevie Wonder, was number 14.
The Spinners were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2003, an Elton John track, “Are You Ready For Love,” was re-issued. It featured The Spinners on backing vocals, putting them in the limelight again.
Although it has been 25 years since their last hit, The Spinners continue to tour on the oldies and nostalgia concert circuits. The group continues to play the music that made them famous decades ago.
