TMA 2010 GlassFest: In the Garden

Ever want to watch an artist make an original design you’ve created in glass? You can have a chance to do just that by attending GlassFest: In the Garden, the Toledo Museum of Art’s annual summer tribute to the Glass City.

This year’s fest takes place from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15 on the Glass Pavilion grounds, and almost everything is free. The beauty of the Museum’s Georgia and David K. Wells Sculpture Garden as well as the glass artists and industrialists who have made Toledo known around the world have inspired the festival’s organizers. The popular event will feature delicious summer fare, artist demonstrations, tours and hands-on activities for children and adults. To help round out the festival, the New Orleans Party Asylum will provide upbeat Dixieland music and jazz.

Throughout the afternoon visitors can help to create a Chihuly-style chandelier from recycled materials, make a glass magnet, a glass mosaic, sun catcher, bubble prints and more.

Those who attend also have the chance to sketch and submit a design for a glass work of art for a TMA glassblower to create. A child’s design will be selected by a TMA glassblower at 2 p.m.; an adult’s design, at 3:30 p.m. The winning designers can pick up the resulting works of art the following week.
Glassblowing demonstrations are at noon, 1, 2 and 3:30 p.m. A special “Cooking with Glass” demonstration will take place at 5 p.m., and free Docent-led tours will be at 2 and 3 p.m. in the Glass Pavilion.

Those who want to make their own glass objects can sign up for an Art Hour session to paint a glass tile at 1, 2 or 3 p.m., or a glass flower at 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 p.m. Adults and children 14 and older accompanied by an adult are welcome. Tickets ($15 members/$25 nonmembers) can be purchased at the Glass Pavilion Visitor Services Desk that day while they last.
There also will be a silent auction of 15 baskets, each of which includes at least one glass object. Proceeds from the auction, organized by the TMA Ambassadors, will benefit Museum programs.

GlassFest is made possible with contributions from Museum members and support from the Ohio Arts Council through a sustainable grant program that encourages economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
