Huntington Center earns LEED Gold - Event 9/16 @ 2:30pm

The Toledo Walleye may never play for a gold medal, but their home ice, the Huntington Center, has just taken home LEED Gold.

The LEED Gold plaque will be unveiled at a news conference on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. in the Huntington Center lobby at the corner of Huron and Jefferson in downtown Toledo.

After a rigorous review process, the Huntington Center has earned the prestigious LEED Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council. LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) is the nationally accepted rating system for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

The Lucas County Commissioners and the Huntington Center design team, including HNTB Architecture (Kansas City, MO) and The Collaborative Inc (Toledo, OH), began exploring sustainable design in early 2007. The group committed to creating a LEED building, as a way to be both environmentally and fiscally responsible.

The LEED process requires thorough documentation during design and construction, as well as after the building opens. LEED includes reviews of practices such as construction pollution prevention, indoor air quality management, and procurement of regionally manufactured materials.

Following the completion of the Huntington Center, the building’s systems underwent an independent review and optimization. This extra step lets the Commissioners know that the mechanical and electrical systems are operating as efficiently as possible. The Huntington Center’s heating and cooling system is designed to operate 28% more efficiently than the standard building code requirement.

Each of the Huntington Center’s sustainable features counts as a point toward its LEED Gold rating, including: 39% reduction in fossil fuel consumption over code; 56% water savings over code; High performance building envelope; Cool roof; 22,000 gallon rainwater collection cistern for landscape irrigation; and Brownfield site remediation.

The design team worked to create visible reminders of the building’s sustainability, including the “green screen” and landscape features. The new LEED Gold plaque, mounted inside the main entry, will add another reminder of the Huntington Center’s accomplishment.

“With each new LEED-certified building, we get one step closer to USGBC’s vision of a sustainable built environment within a generation,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “As the newest member of the LEED family of green buildings, the Huntington Center is an important addition to the growing strength of the green building movement.”

Each time visitors come to the LEED Gold Huntington Center, they will be reminded of how the Lucas County Commissioners went for gold – and won.
