Toledo Library Offers Irish Genealogy Workshop

The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library’s Local History and Genealogy Department presents an Irish Genealogy Workshop scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 7 at Main Library, 325 Michigan St. This workshop is FREE and open to the public, however registration is required by calling 419.259.5233. This is a popular workshop, space is limited, call today to register.

Guest presenters all the way from Ireland are Fintan Mullan and Dr. Brian Trainor, two of the most noted and respected experts in the field of Ulster family history. The two will be in Toledo as part of their USA tour on Irish Genealogy. Mullan and Trainor give an enjoyable and very informative talk, and have been known to enjoy a local ale, so please attend this invaluable and FREE workshop and introduce yourselves!

Workshop Schedule:

· 9-9:30 a.m. Registration

· 9:30-11 a.m. Introduction to Scots-Irish Family History Research Emigration from the North of Ireland to North American in the 18th Century (Story of the Scots-Irish)

· 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Church records in Ireland including gravestone inscriptions. The Great Famine in Ireland and emigration to America 1845-1856

· LUNCH BREAK

· 2:30-4 p.m. Researching the Farming Community in 18th & 19th Century Ireland. The Ulster Plantation: Sources for 17th Century Families

· 4 p.m. Questions and answers

· 5 p.m. Program concludes

Guest Presenters:

Fintan Mullan has served as Research Director of the Ulster Historical Foundation since 2001. He is a non-executive director of the Irish Family History Foundation; a board member of the Northern Ireland Publications Resource (NIPR), a member of the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland Readers Forum, and a former non-executive director of the International Society for British Genealogy & Family History. He has spoken widely in the USA about Irish family history research, and has also spoken in Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. He was educated at Queen’s University Belfast. He has a bachelor’s degree in Irish Politics and Philosophy, and a master’s degree in Organization and Management both from Queen’s University Belfast.

Dr. Brian Trainor retired as Research Director of the Ulster Historical Foundation in September 2006. He was educated at Queen’s University, Belfast, and from there went for a time to the Institute of Historical Research in London. He returned to Belfast where he lectured for several years at Queen’s before becoming, in 1956, an archivist in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. He was Director of the Public Record office from 1970 to 1987, when he became Director and then Research Director of the Ulster Historical Foundation. He holds an Honorary Doctorate of Law from the National University of Ireland. He has been on over 30 lecture tours to America and has spoken on Irish history and genealogy in more than 40 states.
