(Re-released October 13, 2010) – Help the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library celebrate National Friends of Libraries Week, October 17-23!

Have you joined your Friends of the Library? During this special week and anytime of the year, Library lovers of Lucas County are invited and encouraged to join their local Friends of the Library groups.

What is Friends of the Library? Locally, FOL is a nonprofit organization of more than 2,000 dedicated volunteers who encourage, promote and support the ongoing development and use of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library. FOL raises much needed funds, sponsors programs and special events, promotes the Library in the community, and hosts popular used book sales. FOL offers support for the Summer Brown Bag Concert Series, Authors! Authors!, Summer Reading Club programs, local branch activities, and levy campaigns. The organization also operates the local FOL Book Center, located at 1301 N. Reynolds Road, in the Reynolds Corners Shopping Center, and the Classics Gift Shop, which can be accessed from the garage-level entry at Main Library, 325 Michigan St. Most public libraries across the country have FOL organizations.

“I encourage the whole nation to celebrate Friends of Libraries and the work they do. I’m convinced that the libraries are so much richer for the enthusiasm and expertise that the Friends bring to the Library,” said Sally Gardner Reed, executive director of The Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF), a group coordinating the annual National Friends of Libraries Week in October.

“We will use this week to honor our supporters, and dedicated members, and to promote our local Friends of the Library groups throughout our system. This is a time to expand membership in this most valuable organization,” said Margi Levy, local FOL coordinator. There are 19 active FOL chapters in the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library system. One at Main Library, and all 18 branch locations.

***To officially kick off National Friends of the Library Week, the FOL Book Center, 1301 N. Reynolds Rd., will host a public sale beginning tomorrow, October 14, 15 and 16.***
