Symposium About Egyptian Mummies at Toledo Museum of Art
TOLEDO, OHIO—Ancient Egyptians wanted to be immortal, and their mummies give us an eerie sense that they are. In conjunction with its new exhibition The Egypt Experience: Secrets of the Tomb, the Toledo Museum of Art is offering a mini-symposium about mummies and an Egyptian-inspired banquet on Saturday, Nov. 13.
The Three Ancient Egyptians symposium will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Museum's Green Room. Three noted speakers will present archaeological, art historical and medical information about the lives and times of three mummified people. Admission is free to presentations, which include:
11 a.m.: Toledo's Young Priest from Luxor, presented by Sandra E. Knudsen, associate curator of ancient art at TMA and curator of The Egypt Experience: Secrets of the Tomb.
1:30 p.m.: The Life of Meresamun: A Temple Singer in Ancient Egypt, presented by Emily Teeter, research associate and coordinator of special exhibits at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago.
2:30 p.m.: Ramesses I: From Niagara Falls to Atlanta to Cairo, presented by Peter Lacovara, the Michael C. Carlos Museum curator of Egypt, Nubia and Near East at Emory University.
At noon, the Museum's Executive Chef Erika Rapp will present a three-course banquet featuring ancient Egyptian-style delicacies served family style in the Classic Court. Seating for the banquet is limited to 60 persons and advance reservations are required. The cost is $30 for members of the Museum and $35 for nonmembers. Call 419-255-8000, ext. 7432 for reservations.
The Egypt Experience: Secrets of the Tomb exhibition, which contains more than 150 objects spanning 3,000 years of history, goes on view Oct. 29 in a specially designed Lower Level Egyptian Gallery in the Main Museum.
Admission to the special exhibition is free for TMA members and children under 6. Admission for others is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for students 6 to 22 years of age. Buy tickets in person or go to http://www.toledomuseum.org/exhibitions/future/egyptexperience; there is a $1 handling fee for tickets purchased online. Reduced rates are available to school and other groups that book tours in advance.
Made possible by the generosity of Museum members, the exhibition also is supported in part by Taylor Cadillac, Buckeye CableSystem and the Ohio Arts Council, which helps fund programs at the Museum through a sustainable grant program that encourages cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
