Fort Meigs Lecture Series: Mackinac Before Photography

Posted: Wednesday, November 3, 2010 by: Rick Finch | Category: Arts and Entertainment

Brian Leigh Dunnigan, curator of maps at the University of Michigan Clements Library, will present "A Picturesque Situation: Mackinac Before Photography” on Thursday, November 18th at the Fort Meigs Visitor Center in Perrysburg. The meeting starts at 7:30 PM and is free and open to the public.

Mr. Dunnigan will explore the Straits of Mackinac region through the use of pre-photographic images, from the arrival of the French until the Civil War. These images served as the basis of his book of the same title published by Wayne State University Press in the spring of 2008. The vivid drawings and illustrations will help explain the history and development of the region.

Brian is a noted historian on the Great Lakes region and the War of 1812. He has written numerous articles on the subject. In 2001, he published Frontier Metropolis: Picturing Early Detroit, 1701 – 1838, which explored the early history of Detroit using rare drawings and maps of the city. Mr. Dunnigan is a trained historian, having received a master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Michigan. He also completed a master’s degree in museum studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program in New York. Prior to his work at the Clements Library, Brian worked at historic sites including Fort Wayne and Old Fort Niagara.

The informative program will be presented at Fort Meigs in the visitor center located at 29100 West River Road in Perrysburg, Ohio on Thursday, November 18th at 7:30 PM. The program is free and open to the public. This presentation is sponsored by the Anderton Bentley Fund in memory of Christopher Perky, who served at Fort Meigs during the War of 1812.
