Artists Sought for Sylvania Area Chamber Art Project

In 2009, Sylvania took Northwest Ohio by storm with its Bench Project “Sittin Pretty in Sylvania.” Forty-two businesses participated in the project which placed artistically enhanced benches in downtown Sylvania and local businesses. Some companies were quite disappointed about being left out of the project as the beautiful benches delighted the community. The city had many visitors from other cities stopping by just to see the benches.

With the success of the bench project and the need to keep art and artists visible, the Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce, City of Sylvania, Sylvania Township and the Sylvania Community Arts Commission is introducing “Potting Pretty in Sylvania.” The Chamber’s hope is that 80 decorated wood and ceramic indoor/outdoor pots will be placed in and around the Sylvania area using several area artisans, craftsmen and designers.

Artists are being sought to design and produce works of art on the decorative (ceramic and wood) pots that will grace the city, township, private businesses and residential properties. Sponsoring businesses can request special designs and many of the pots are available for presale to those businesses and residents that want to make sure they get one of the creations. Only 80 will be produced; sponsorships range from $500 to $2500 and the cost of a pot is $350.00. Interested artists can call 419-882-2135 or [email protected]. for an application.

The pots will be available for viewing for several weeks beginning with a gala unveiling in May at Downtown Delights. Additionally, local landscapers will be designing floral creations for the pots. Residents and businesses will be able to vote for their favorite pot art and there will be people’s choice and artistic merit awards given at a gala unveiling and auction of any unsold pots held during “Downtown Delights” week-end. Awards of $300, $200 and $100 will be given to first, second and third place in both the people’s choice and artistic merit categories.

Many of the pots will go on to permanent homes in so the assurance of getting a pot is better by participating in the program. The proceeds from “Potting Pretty in Sylvania” are used to fund programs and projects in the community through grants from the Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce.

If a business or resident is interested in Potting Pretty, please call the Chamber at 419-882-2135 or to be involved in this project, please email either [email protected] or [email protected].

The significance of participation in a commemorative public outdoor art project is a tremendous tribute to local artistic talent and will be a beautiful addition to the streets, business grounds and residential areas in Sylvania.

Good evening! I am from Findlay,OH, where I teach private art classes in my downtown art studio. Primarilly, my works are mixed media, based in watercolor and/or acrylic. Art is my living. There is always something new and different.

Several years ago, by submitted design, I was selected as one of 10 designers to "Design a Star" for Downtown Findlay. I must admit, mine was brightly colored & quite fanciful! All stars were 5 pointed, 3 dimensional plexiglass stars that measured 5 feet from the sidewalk, including their base. I enjoyed the project thoroughly. My star was purchased by the "then Sky Bank", which is now Huntington. In short, I have had experience with "City Art", or pieces designed for specific installments within cities.

Pat, I'd very much like to meet with you regarding the scope of your beautiful project.
I'll thank you in advance for the opportunity to sit and discuss details. You may reach me by calling my studio phone: (419) 957-5651.

I look forward to hearing from you!
