Arts Commission and Health Care REIT Invest $140k in Arts
The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo (ACGT) is pleased to announce a special partnership with Health Care REIT that will allow for the potential purchase of local, regional and national art works totaling up to $140,000 dollars.
The company is currently seeking the works of local artists to populate and decorate the walls and halls of its recently acquired and renovated colonial-style office facility located at 4500 Dorr St. in West Toledo (formerly home to Dana Holding Corp.). Two separate calls for artists have been issued, the first a cumulative $50,000 call for primarily two-dimensional works of art from local and regional artists, the second composed of two $45,000 calls for local and national requests for qualifications for glass art work and/or site-specific installations. Details of each call are available via the Calls for Artists link on the ACGT’s homepage at www.acgt.org.
The ACGT will work with Health Care REIT to facilitate the process of acquiring the local art works.

Jurors will excuse themselves from the jurying process if a conflict of interest arises.
This call is primarily seeking two-dimensional artworks, but other media are still encouraged to apply. An opportunity for site-specific artwork to be designed and created specifically for the Health Care REIT office space is will also be available.
Visit www.acgt.org for a floor plan and photos of the office space. All site-specific entries must include a detailed technical description of the work, stating: all materials to be used, space requirements, intended space modifications, additional equipment, and daily and ongoing maintenance. If there is no prior photographic documentation of the submitted installation entry, a professional presentation of drawings, plans, and work samples may replace the digital image requirement.

For the Request for Qualifications (RFQ):
Health Care REIT is also seeking to commission one or two larger works that will pay homage to Toledo’s heritage as the Glass City and its role as the birthplace of the studio glass arts movement. The company is requesting qualifications from artists or teams of artists for glass artwork(s) or site-specific/installation works incorporating glass for its new headquarters building. The artwork(s) will be sited in high-traffic areas and in prominent locations throughout the building complex.
The artwork(s) must be durable, low maintenance, and appropriate to the location. When designing the artwork, the artist should take into consideration the high amount of pedestrian traffic within the center, light (both natural and artificial), existing architectural materials and temperature control.
Works in a variety of glass media, technique and forms will be considered. A wide variety of forms for the artwork will also be considered. Forms may include functional elements such as seating or display cases; artwork integrated into the existing architecture of the building; murals and freestanding sculpture. Although Health Care REIT does not endorse any restrictions on artistic content, the project’s Artist Selection Panel will consider the artwork(s) appropriateness for public space when making their selection.
The budget for the RFQ is as follows: The three artists or artist teams selected to develop proposals will receive $2,000 to cover all expenses related to the development of the proposal. This includes travel expenses related to a site visit, materials for proposal development and any other expenses related to this phase of the process.
Health Care REIT may select one or two artwork(s) from this pool of submissions. The budget for each artwork(s) component is not to exceed $45,000,including but not limited to all expenses related to project completion, site preparation, artists design fee, materials, fabrication costs, documentation, transportation, installation and travel.
Eligibility requirements are as follows: The project is open to all artists, age 18 and over, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical or mental disability. Artist teams are eligible to apply, including teams of artists from multiple disciplines.
For detailed timelines and specific instructions on the application process, as well as photos of the facility and grounds of the building, interested artists and artist teams are asked to visit www.acgt.org and see the Call for Artists Section on the home page.
“We are thrilled that Health care REIT is extending this opportunity to local artists and furthering Toledo’s international reputation to glass artists,” Marc Folk, ACGT’s Executive Director said of the announcement, “In these challenging economic times, a $140,000 commitment to the artistic community and the individual entrepreneurs and small businesses that make up that population will have a significant impact on Toledo’s creative community. We are also pleased to partner with Health Care REIT and assist in this wonderful opportunity. It is proof that partnership between corporate and nonprofit agencies can help to build a more sustainable, inter-connected, and prosperous creative city.”
