Felting is the process of using hot water, soap and agitation to open and realign wool fibers. When dry the result is a sturdy non-woven or matted fabric that is quite water resistant. Felting is an ancient skill for working with wool fiber that according to historians likely predates knitting or weaving. Technically felting uses only wool fiber while fulling is similar method that starts with a knitted item that is then processed. The result is shrinkage and a tighter, sturdier garment that is often referred to as boiled wool. Commonly both felting and fulling are referred to as felting. Fiber artists use felting process to create materials for two or three dimensional works of art. This workshop will fully explore the Wet Felt process and how to use the aligned fibers artistically in multi-media or fiber art works.
