Lourdes Drama Society Picks Playwriting Competition Winners
The Lourdes Drama Society sponsors an annual one-act playwriting competition offering cash awards for first, second and third place, as well as an opportunity to be considered for production at the group’s Festival of One Acts. This year’s competition garnered international attention with 59 submissions received from across the US and Canada. The following winners have been selected for the 2010 one-act playwriting competition:
??First Place: Off Campus by Russell Weeks, Seattle WA
Rebecca, Holly and Ann have left the dormitory for the freedom of living off campus. Along with freedom comes a fire drill; a high-stakes evacuation testing their friendship, their courage and their ethics.
?Second Place: It Ate Houston by Wil Denson, Eau Claire WI
An isolated rural radio studio. Night. A summer storm. A group of radio actors and technicians producing live – a horror show. When unknown to them, the events they portray over the airwaves begin to actually happen in the studio.
?Third Place: Petz Rocks by Lynda Gaug, Saint Joseph MO
Dezy the dog is obsessing about his favorite pastime – riding in the car with THE GUY – while Correy the cat chases a bug around the room. When Ponce the parakeet becomes his new target, Ponce repeats one of his favorite classic movie lines, “Houston, we have a problem!”
All three plays will premier in this year’s Festival of One Acts scheduled for April 29 through May 1, 2011. Stay tuned to www.lourdes.edu/dramasociety for additional details.
