There Is Still Time for Your Child to Make the Grade

The second quarter for the 2010-2011 school year is nearing an end. Don’t panic, there is still plenty of time to help your child make the grade. As report cards come home, be sure to provide some positive feedback to your child whether you are happy or disappointed with their performance. Your reaction can affect your child’s self-esteem and future success as a student.

Below are tips to help you evaluate your child’s progress:

• Praise your child for good grades and recognize their efforts and hard work.
• Read teacher comments on your child’s report card. They can be very informative and give a better indication of your child’s ability then the actual grade. If you don’t understand a comment, follow up with the teacher.
• If your child gets all A’s each quarter, consider an enrichment program to provide a challenge.
• If your child’s grades are low, consult their teacher(s) to see if they suggest remedial assistance or have recommendations for improvement.
• Discuss low grades with your child and the importance of improving those grades. Together, develop a plan of action. For example, reading nightly can help to increase a child’s vocabulary and improve comprehension. For younger students, take turns reading – child reads a page, parent reads a page – this shows your child that reading is important to you and also gives you a chance to spend quality time with each other.
• Keep in touch with your child’s teacher. Attend parent nights and conferences, reach out to the teacher if you have questions or concerns and don’t wait until the next report card. Sometimes a quick email is an easy way to get information.
• Routinely check your child’s home folder for information and to see how they have performed on assignments. You will have a better idea of how they are doing before receiving their report card.
• If your child’s teacher provides an outline, schedule or calendar, review it at the beginning of the week so you know what is coming up. You can help your child learn to prioritize tasks and organize their work.
Active participation in your child’s education will enable you to gain a better sense of how they are doing in school and show them that their academic performance and accomplishments are important to you.
