What if you had to choose The Last Book on Earth?
(Released March 1, 2011) – The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library is pleased to announce its annual Ruth Blank Venner and Mary Jane Blank McCormick Essay Contest! This year’s theme: The Last Book on Earth!
Imagine! Strange craft are appearing in the skies all around the world! Mysterious creatures from a faraway planet have started zapping all of our books up into their ships. You have one chance to grab a book and hide it away before it’s gone forever! Contest Rules: Write an essay about what book you would choose and why. Hurry! Time is running out!
This year’s essay contest is a 500-word maximum and is open to grades K through 12. Grade level essay categories are as follows: K-2nd grade, 3rd -5th, 6th -8th, and 9th –12th. Prizes will be awarded to winning essay entrants in each category: 1st place $200, 2nd place $100, 3rd place $50 and 6 honorable mentions will be awarded $25 each. Prizes are provided by the Ruth Blank Venner and Mary Jane Blank McCormick Memorial Project of the Friends of the Library.
Contest essay forms are available to download online at toledolibrary.org, and at all Library branch locations, at Main Library, and Outreach Services (bookmobile). Essays can be typed or hand-written and must be turned in attached to your entry form by March 26, 2011. No entries will be accepted after March 26.
The late Ruth Blank Venner was a past president of the Friends of the Library (FOL) and an active member. Mrs. Venner, who died in 1996, was married 44 years to the well-known television news anchor Frank Venner. Mrs. Venner’s brother Leon W. Blank, as a way to honor his sister’s memory and to promote reading among youth, established the Ruth Blank Venner Memorial Project of the Friends of the Library beginning in 1996. Last year, Mr. Blank added the memory of his other sister Mary Jane Blank McCormick to the essay contest and FOL Memorial Project. McCormick died in 2009.
